What we do

The Research Unit of ICMPD was established in 1997, and ever since has been committed to advancing knowledge on migration-related issues. We strive to foster cooperation within the research community and meet the growing need for policy-relevant research.

Our research topics, closely aligned with ICMPD’s main thematic areas, are as follows:

Migration Governance and Policy-making

Governance and policy-making in relation to underlying migration realities.

Safe Migration, Displacement and Protection

Vulnerabilities, access to protection and protection mechanisms, asylum and refugee policies and practices.

Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion

Integration of migrants and refugees, and social cohesion in host societies, dynamics, policies and practices.

Migration Trends and Dynamics

Various forms of mobility, driving factors, trends, patterns and political regulation.

Our work is characterised by empirical, interdisciplinary studies with practical and impactful outcomes. We work closely on projects and publications with other teams and units across ICMPD and with external partners, and the website is the central hub for those collective efforts, showcasing the unique contributions and expertise of our research work.
